Poll Inspectors / Election Workers

Become A Poll Worker Form

 Overview
  • Conducting elections is a big job, and we cannot do it alone. Each year the Broome County Board of Elections utilizes 600-1000 Poll Inspectors in various capacities around the county in order to get the job done.

Poll Inspector Training Classes
  • 2024 CLASSES ARE NOT YET SCHEDULED

  • Broome County Warehouse & Training Center

    • (1 N. Floral Ave, Binghamton,13905)

  • 3-hour Training Class followed by a Certification Exam

  • Each Inspector gets a Training Manual 

  • IF YOU DO NOT TAKE CLASS, AND PASS THE EXAM YOU WILL NOT WORK UPCOMING ELECTIONS!

Qualifications for All Positions
  • Must be registered (or a pre-registered 17 y/o) in New York State 

  • Able to read, write, and speak English fluently (bi/multilingual also welcome)

  • Fluency with current technology is encouraged (hands on training provided)

  • Able to perform all of the essential functions of the job

  • Access to reliable transportation (not all public transportation routes run at 5am report or 9:30pm end times)

  • Must attend mandatory training session and pass exam for state certification

Poll Worker Responsibilities
  • Election Day Placement is assigned by the need of the Board of Elections

  • Election workers are expected to report at 5:15am (unless you arrange an half-day PM placement)

  • Workers get an hour lunch and two other breaks throughout the day

  • Dress comfortably, but stay business/casual 

  • Workers should wear their name badge while working 

  • No political discussions or electioneering by workers or voters at the poll sites

  • Please report any incident that makes you uncomfortable to the Board of Elections

Compensation
  • Poll Inspectors earn $15.00/hour tax free on Election Days.

  • Inspector Chairpersons earn $16.00/hour tax free on Election Days.
  • Both Inspectors & Chairpersons are paid $25 for taking the State required yearly training class and exam.

Inspector Manual
  • The Board of Elections supplies all Poll Workers (Inspectors and Chairpersons) with an Inspector Manual as an educational tool, a binder copy is provided during training class.

  • It is a great Election Day reference as well as it contains all procedures and checklists.

  • A digital copy is available for viewing or download through the Inspector Portal.

NOTE: There is no guarantee that you’ll be appointed to work, or be assigned to the same Poll Site as in previous elections, Poll Inspectors are placed by Board of Election need, though we do our best at being fair and accommodating to all.
