House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia was beaten handily in his Federal Primary by Dave Brat one week ago today. The double-digit loss was a complete shock to the incumbent, whose internal polling anticipated him winning with 62% of the vote.
But the pollsters misjudged the size of the voting population.
At first, Cantor's people were trying to spin the situation as "not enough people came out to the polls". In reality, voter turnout was around 20,000 people higher than expected, based on previous primary results.
Proof positive that showing up does make a difference.
It is our responsibility to vote for our leadership, to choose our representatives. To get to the polls on Election Day. To cast our ballots and know at the end of the day we have done our civic duty.
The people of Virginia did. And they shocked the country.
